    On the Ability of a CNN to Realize Image-to-Image Language Conversion

    The purpose of this paper is to reveal the ability that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have on the novel task of image-to-image language conversion. We propose a new network to tackle this task by converting images of Korean Hangul characters directly into images of the phonetic Latin character equivalent. The conversion rules between Hangul and the phonetic symbols are not explicitly provided. The results of the proposed network show that it is possible to perform image-to-image language conversion. Moreover, it shows that it can grasp the structural features of Hangul even from limited learning data. In addition, it introduces a new network to use when the input and output have significantly different features.Comment: Published at ICDAR 201

    Comparison of conservative treatment versus transcatheter arterial embolisation for the treatment of spontaneously ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma

    Purpose: To elucidate the prognostic factors in the spontaneous rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to determine whether transcatheter arterial embolisation (TAE) is associated with better prognosis compared to conservative treatment. Material and methods: A retrospective multicentre study was conducted involving 71 patients with spontaneous rupture of HCC. A conservative treatment group (Cons T group) included 20 patients, while a transcatheter arterial embolisation group (TAE group) included 51 patients. Results: The median survival time (MST) in the Cons T group was only 16 days and the survival rate was 39% at one month, whereas the MST in the TAE group was 28 days and the one month survival rate was 63%. However, there is no statistically significant difference in the overall survival between Cons T and TAE groups (p = 0.213). Multivariable analysis identified only the presence of distant metastasis as an independent prognostic factor (p = 0.023). A subanalysis including patients without distant metastasis showed that the presence of portal vein tumour thrombosis was a significant prognostic factor (p = 0.015). Conclusions: Distant metastasis appears to be a prognostic factor in spontaneous rupture of HCC. In cases without distant metastasis, portal vein tumour thrombosis could influence the prognosis.     Metallicity dependence of the Hercules stream in Gaia/RAVE data -- explanation by non-closed orbits

    The origin of the Hercules stream, the most prominent velocity substructure in the Solar neighbour disc stars, is still under debate. Recent accurate measurements of position, velocity, and metallicity provided by Tycho Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) and RAdial Velocity Experiments (RAVE) have revealed that the Hercules stream is most clearly seen in the metal-rich region ([Fe/H] > 0), while it is not clearly seen in lower metallicity region ([Fe/H] < -0.25). By using a large number of chemo-dynamical 2D test-particle simulations with a rotating bar and/or spiral arms, we find that the observed [Fe/H] dependence of the Hercules stream is a natural consequence of the inside-out formation of the stellar disc and the existence of highly non-closed orbits in the rotating frame of the bar or spiral arms. Our successful models that reproduce the observed properties of the Hercules stream include not only fast-bar-only and fast-bar+spiral models, but also slow-bar+spiral models. This indicates that it is very difficult to estimate the pattern speed of the bar or spiral arms based only on the observations of the Hercules stream in the Solar neighbourhood. As a by-product of our simulations, we make some predictions about the locations across the Galactic plane where we can observe velocity bimodality that is not associated with the Hercules stream. These predictions can be tested by the forthcoming Gaia data, and such a test will improve our understanding of the evolution of the Milky Way stellar disc

    Deep Learning Predicts Rapid Over-softening and Shelf Life in Persimmon Fruits

    In contrast to the progress in the research on physiological disorders relating to shelf life in fruit crops, it has been difficult to non-destructively predict their occurrence. Recent high-tech instruments have gradually enabled non-destructive predictions for various disorders in some crops, while there are still issues in terms of efficiency and costs. Here, we propose application of a deep neural network (or simply deep learning) to simple RGB images to predict a severe fruit disorder in persimmon, rapid over-softening. With 1,080 RGB images of ‘Soshu’ persimmon fruits, three convolutional neural networks (CNN) were examined to predict rapid over-softened fruits with a binary classification and the date to fruit softening. All of the examined CNN models worked successfully for binary classification of the rapid over-softened fruits and the controls with > 80% accuracy using multiple criteria. Furthermore, the prediction values (or confidence) in the binary classification were correlated to the date to fruit softening. Although the features for classification by deep learning have been thought to be in a black box by conventional standards, recent feature visualization methods (or “explainable” deep learning) has allowed identification of the relevant regions in the original images. We applied Grad-CAM, Guided backpropagation, and layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP), to find early symptoms for CNNs classification of rapid over-softened fruits. The focus on the relevant regions tended to be on color unevenness on the surface of the fruit, especially in the peripheral regions. These results suggest that deep learning frameworks could potentially provide new insights into early physiological symptoms of which researchers are unaware

    The tertiary structure of the human Xkr8–Basigin complex that scrambles phospholipids at plasma membranes

    Xkr8–Basigin is a plasma membrane phospholipid scramblase activated by kinases or caspases. We combined cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography to investigate its structure at an overall resolution of 3.8 Å. Its membrane-spanning region carrying 22 charged amino acids adopts a cuboid-like structure stabilized by salt bridges between hydrophilic residues in transmembrane helices. Phosphatidylcholine binding was observed in a hydrophobic cleft on the surface exposed to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane. Six charged residues placed from top to bottom inside the molecule were essential for scrambling phospholipids in inward and outward directions, apparently providing a pathway for their translocation. A tryptophan residue was present between the head group of phosphatidylcholine and the extracellular end of the path. Its mutation to alanine made the Xkr8–Basigin complex constitutively active, indicating that it plays a vital role in regulating its scramblase activity.     Expectant management of a herniated amniotic sac presenting as silent uterine rupture: a case report and literature review.

    Foetal membranes bulging into the abdominal cavity is a unique initial manifestation of silent or complete uterine rupture during pregnancy. Since silent uterine rupture has potential risk for complete uterine rupture, which leads to acute life-threatening complications for both the mother and baby, it is difficult to determine whether to manage expectantly or surgically, including repair of the uterine wall or termination of the pregnancy, especially in the early second trimester. We present here a case of a herniated amniotic sac with overstretched uterine wall of the fundus presenting as silent uterine rupture, which was incidentally detected on routine ultrasonography at 18 weeks' gestation in a 38-year-old primigravida with a history of myomectomy for diffuse uterine leiomyomatosis. Magnetic resonance imaging examination revealed that the myometrium thickness was fully maintained at the site of the foetal membranes ballooning. The pregnancy was therefore managed expectantly and continued to successful delivery at 30 weeks' gestation. The precise assessment of the uterine wall may be essential to manage a herniated amniotic sac presenting as silent uterine rupture and to optimise the outcome of the pregnancy.     Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs). XIII. Large-scale Feedback and Star Formation in a Low-luminosity Quasar at z = 7.07 on the Local Black Hole to Host Mass Relation

    We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array [C II] 158 μm line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations (0 70 × 0 56 resolution) toward HSC J124353.93+010038.5 (J1243+0100) at z = 7.07, the only low-luminosity (M1450 > −25 mag) quasar currently known at z > 7. The FIR continuum is bright (1.52 mJy) and resolved with a total luminosity of LFIR = 3.5 × 1012 Le. The spatially extended component is responsible for ∼40% of the emission. The area-integrated [C II] spectrum shows a broad wing (FWHM = 997 km s−1 , L[C II] = 1.2 × 109 Le), as well as a bright core (FWHM = 235 km s−1 , L[C II] = 1.9 × 109 Le). This wing is the first detection of a galactic-scale quasar-driven outflow (atomic outflow rate >447 Me yr−1 ) at z > 7. The estimated large mass-loading factor of the total outflow (e.g., 9 relative to the [C II]-based star formation rate) suggests that this outflow will soon quench the star formation of the host. The core gas dynamics are governed by rotation, with a rotation curve suggestive of a compact bulge (∼3.3 × 1010 Me), although it is not yet spatially resolved. Finally, we found that J1243+0100 has a black hole mass–to–dynamical mass (and –to–bulge mass) ratio of ∼0.4% (∼1%), consistent with the local value within the uncertainties. Our results therefore suggest that the black hole–host coevolution relation is already in place at z ∼ 7 for this object
